According to the National Cancer Institute, some medical professionals make false claims about cancer cures, which can lead to harm and financial exploitation of patients. A study published in JAMA Oncology found that approximately 1 in 5 cancer patients reported using alternative therapies, and many of these therapies are promoted by medical professionals with false or misleading claims. The American Cancer Society estimates that the annual cost of alternative therapies in the United States is over $30 billion.
